Time is fast approaching the year of 2013 – and with it comes next years designs of cool and new stuff! Personally I have a bit of a gripe, and I have a question for you all.
Now, instead of a Lime Tiger i4 I can get a Lime Atlas one! Admittedly, Dye’s patterns this year look a helluva lot better than last year. Seriously, the mottos plastered all over the gear was lame. Honestly though, do any of you get excited about the “new” stuff every year?
Clearly, releasing the same product with slight to no changes has been working for someone.
Clearly there are some differences between the C12 and C13 soft goods but nothing big that is going to actually change perception on the quality of goods or if you should buy them.
This issue even goes beyond the soft goods. The Ego no longer has a number associated with it because Planet Eclipse made a smart move of letting us all know they have nothing they can/want to change on the platform. Unfortunately for most other markers, they are treated just like the soft goods. Milling changes, colors change, the box design changes; but in reality nothing really changes.
Look at the DM12 compared to the DM13 – Aside from the trigger and some milling absolutely nothing changed. NOTHING. Does it bother you at all? I know it does for me. I get WAY MORE excited when there is a brand new product (I.E. DAM) that is announced. I like new, I like different, I like out of the ordinary.
I don’t know about you, but I care about the 2013 version of all of this stuff about as much as I care about the upcoming 2014 Toyota Camry.

See what I did there? I actually don’t. I feel like in a way, some manufacturers are just complacent with changing some colors and rolling out “new” gear every year and I just don’t like it.
There is of course a flip side to this argument that if nothing “changed” in the industry year by year, if things were not created for you to purchase because they are just ever so slightly different than the rendition that came before it — would you get bored?
Personally I wouldn’t – but then again I am not a gun/gear whore of any kind. I have three pairs of pants I have gotten through seasons of sponsorship, and I am happy with those pants until they fall apart. I don’t need to run out and get the new Slash Blue Redemption pants because that pattern is calling to me like my one true love.
The difference for me between this, and when the E-Flex came out last year is absolutely huge. My mind was so blown I thought about getting arrested for knocking Simon the ‘eff out and running off into the sunset with my stolen E-flexes never to be seen again.
That is the thing though, the E-Flex is a mash-up of two currently existing masks that was something absolutely brand new and different. It did not make the Proflex a waste of money, or the E-Vent even more of a waste of money, because it was always awful. The E-Flex came into the fold as an instant contender that did not directly compete with the other two masks it was related to. It was an extremely smart decision and I am still excited that the mask released in the first place.
I am looking forward to seeing what new and different things come in the years to come, I am not excited about if I will be able to get C14 Pink Hack pants or whatever they decide to make their patterns next year.
My question to you is, do you get excited at all? Is my opinion off base from the rest of the ballers out there? Will you go out and buy a jersey just because it is the next years version? Do you appreciate the fact that the jersey you own currently is no longer on the market and no one else can get it now that the year has passed?
Really, as a consumer the only true advantage I see is that as soon as the new stuff comes out, the old stuff goes on sale because it is no longer under the MAP umbrella. The whole thing just frustrates me.
We work in an environment when you have to care about what you do more than the compensation you are getting. It is just a reality of this business and what we are trying to achieve.
Like any business, good people are hard to find – but because of the nature of this job and what it must mean for the employees for them to truly succeed and feel accomplished; good people are even harder to find. We do not have the time, resources or patience to have a revolving door for employees. Where some places are able to have a high-turnover rate and it just doesn’t matter, for us it would be like shooting ourselves in the foot with a cannon.
I kid you not, back in August 2009 when I was hired, there were two other employees on the team (aside from Ethan). Within a month, just myself and Ethan were left. He had cleaned house and was no longer interested in those who don’t have any drive to learn, and work hard for something bigger than themselves. Don’t get me wrong, Ethan is not a slave driver, he is just a realist with no room for bullshit.
Even so, it’s tough to find good people – I have seen 14 people come in and out of these doors since then. For a company that was 2 people in the back-half of 2009 and is currently 5 people in 2012 – That is a pretty awful turnover rate. Especially considering that other than myself, the only person who has been here for 2 years or more is Jeff. Jay just passed his one year mark, and Russell is going to be hitting his one-year around February.
I bring this up, because we are hiring two new people and have decided to move on from actively trying to find them. Honestly, with our pay grade and work style, more often than not we attract younger people. Not to say this is bad, I am 23 and was hired at 19 – but in general someone who is younger works purely for the paycheck and does not have the maturity or drive to do or be more than a 9-5-time-filling-paycheck-collection-employee.
Our most recent Employees were friends first and then became a part of the company because they had been around us, watching what we are working for and wanting to be a part of that. They WANT to be a part of Hustle Paintball and our mission to take the paintball world by storm with our knowledge and helpfulness. Seriously, Jay and Russell were Team Anomaly members first, and then became Hustle Paintball employees. We are so happy to have trusted and taken the plunge into hiring them, because we would not have had the video and creativity surge we have had lately were it not for them.
It is because of Jay & Russell’s success that another Anomaly Team member will become a part of the company, our good friend and brother in arms, Erik Cromer.
Erik has been on the team for a little over a year now but he has been a friend for much longer than that. We are excited to have someone like Erik joining the team. Not only does he care about us as friends, but he cares about the company and our mission. Coming up shortly he will be answering phones and emails just like the rest of us, so look out! Welcome him to the company if you interact with him at all .
Now, we do not just hire directly from the team.. even though the last three have been and still are team members. We just changed our outlook and went searching for those who we KNOW that we can trust, that have expressed a care and love for this company and what we are meaning to accomplish. The second employee we are hiring will not be starting until February or March, but those of you who read this blog regularly will know of him.
Jason was originally a customer who just showed up in our showroom one day because he wanted to purchase a paintball marker and some gear. However, he did not know much about the sport and had heard about how we like to educate our customers and allow them to make their own purchasing decisions. (Contrary to experiences he had with other places who prey on lack of knowledge and just shovel expensive products your direction, pressuring you into buying them.)
Jason liked the way we treated him and his familiy so much when he came in here that he decided he wanted to volunteer in his free time, just to help us out.

Fast forward to today and Jason has become a close friend of ours who we miss when he is not around. So we are extremely excited to be able to have him be a part of our team after the new year.

I like to draw parallels between the paintball industry and the snowboarding industry.
At first glance this may seem a little odd, but they both started in a similar time (around the 1980s) and they are both represented by an older group and a much younger group of folk. A group who in some form or another has been full of misfits of sorts, cut from a different cloth. In essence, those of us who play paintball, and snowboard in a sense, often can have a problem with uptight blowhards.
This brings me to the subject of this blog. Apparently, a few of our neighbors around town don’t like us too much *gasp!*. You see, in the DAM video review/efficiency test we built up this sweet shooting range. OMG SAFETY PATROL! Now there is no netting, but there is a natural safety feature built in. We have a huge distance of open area for the paint to fall that is closed off to the public, thus eliminating the need for netting. Being that we spent all this time building the target range up; we are obviously going to be the children that we are at heart and just want to shoot paint at it. I mean, why not?
It’s post 5PM and we are outside just messing around with our newest toys the Dye DAM, GOG eNMEy and Valken Proton. We have some older paint we bought a long time ago that ended up staining, and we are not going to sell that to customers so it has been kept as tech/shooting/boredom paint in the office. We’re having a grand old time having target competitions & shooting the crap out of our new range when big blue shows up.
This wasn’t in the “tap you on the shoulder I have a question” type of way, no, this was a legitimate Hollywood moment. Ethan turned and at that exact moment *BOOM* all of the lights on the cruiser turn on and blind us all. Sweet eye squinting interrogation room vibe, if you catch my meaning.
Yeah, it was kinda like that.
Now, we’re a business, we have had to work with the police on a few occasions in our time at Broomfield. Truth be told, the Broomfield Police are absolutely spectacular individuals and we have always had a good experience with them. This experience was no different :). So, after the lights were turned down and we were able to see, the police just asked us what we were doing. They could see we were clearly product testing, and that we were within the guidelines of the law and.. honestly, that we weren’t dumb kids with dangerous tools acting all foolish. They informed us that someone had called about “gunshots” – more specifically, a revolver. I’m not sure how many of you have shot firearms before.. but a revolver does not really have a specific sound signature. It certainly does not compare to a paintball gun, by any stretch of the imagination.
At any rate, this was not the first time this had happened, and we could clearly tell the cops had the attitude that they knew they were checking in on something that did not need to be checked on. The best part about the entire experience is that the officers informed us that if they were to be called on to our location like this again, they would politely inform the caller that we were within the guidelines of the law and they can cool their jets. In parting, one of the officers said that they were quite jealous of us being able to just sit out back and shoot paintballs at stuff for fun. And I quote “Ok, you guys enjoy yourselves, it looks like a lot of fun… I’m jealous” *wistful look*
Bringing this right around back to my original statement. How often as paintballers do you all have to deal with some ignorant ass who thinks you are just some dumb kid shooting the town stop signs? What are some of your stories of having to deal with a little guff because you like to shoot gelatin filled with food product at inanimate objects.. or most importantly other ballers!
Seriously, this stuff is nonsense.
Most importantly, to keep these stereotypes from continuing, play paintball responsibly and safely. Don’t give people a reason to dislike us, make them envy us! Just like the Broomfield police :).

It has been almost a year since I first saw these. I am not sure what took so long for them to be released but to be honest I am actually excited about an Axe for once. The price is a little hefty, but at least you are getting a true high end marker when it comes down to it. There is a lot of support for the Axe in the industry, which I do not necessarily agree with, but this Axe is actually legit.
Out of the box the bugger comes with a two-piece freak kit that includes bore sizes of .675, .680, .685, .690, and .695. Now, some of these sizes are a little odd, which throws me off and bums me out a little bit. .695?! who makes paint that size anyhow?
Bear in mind, the Freak Kit does not come with an Apex tip, because that’s silly.
The largest I have ever had to bore my paint is when it has swelled beyond .690, and that was a few years ago before paint got smaller. But I digress, the fact that it does come with a barrel kit is really quite cool.
What really sets this apart is that it comes with the Redline already installed on the marker, something I believe all Axes should come with out of the gate, but whatever. The Redline brings the design of the Axe full circle and makes it a true contender. Those of you who like to mess with your settings to get it tuned just right for you, now you don’t have to deal with one blinking LED and having to sit with your manual on your lap. Lastly, I think we can all agree that this is easily one of the best looking Axes to ever be produced, I mean just look at that color combination!
Aside from these improvements over the standard Axe it comes with all the things people have come to love about the platform. The Relay ASA, hoseless design, light and compact. It is also backed by Empire so you know that you will be taken care of if something goes wrong.
Did I mention what they did with the threading on the Freak Kit that comes with this marker? Seriously, I have NO CLUE why anyone has not done this before but I hope everyone starts to follow suit. Proper paintball guns are Autococker threaded, right? This is true, except as you all know it takes an eternity to thread AC barrels on and off, so, why not shorten them? That is exactly what Empire did with the threads on the Freak Kit that comes with this edition of the Axe. It is so excellent to get that barrel off/on in 1 1/2 turns. That is not a typo 1 1/2 turns! It sounds so inconsequential at the moment, but seriously try it out for size and you WILL NOT want to go back. No, this does not affect any barrels you currently own that are Autococker threaded, they will thread into this Axe just like they normally would.
I think the main bragging right about owning this marker though (I mean, we’re paintballers, a lot of us are trashy guys that just want to have something you DON’T) is that it is extremely limited. They made these markers to order, only as many as were ordered by dealers at Kee Action Sports Premier Dealer Day last February are getting these. They are not a marker that is going to be in production and very few people will have them. As it stands we only have 3 total.
So, if you are an Axe fan, which we know a lot of you are, I mean look at some of the hurt feelings in the comments on our versus video and you will see what I mean :).
But.. but.. Infamous uses the Axe SO IT IS JUST AS GOOD AS THE EGO!!
We only have a few of these and we are not going to be getting anymore, snatch them up and you will easily have the best and prettiest Axe to be produced that all the other fans of this marker will drool over.
My two cents? It is the only Axe worth spending money on if you are going to buy one. This is a legit marker that I would not mind shooting – against or with my friends and their Egos.
Don’t you think the paintball world could use a heck of a lot more than it currently has? Let’s be honest here, most places in the industry (especially in retail) do not take this part of their business seriously. That is where Hustle Paintball’s mission has come from. I am sure a lot of you have a local store of some kind that you shop at. Not just because you want to support local business and the store is a hop down the street from your jammies and cereal bowl; but because that store provides you a service.
Yeah, we have a local Colorado showroom as well :).
They have your back 100% of the way and understand that when you have an issue, it needs to be taken care of. But guess what? It doesn’t matter if you are in any one of the 50 states of the United States of America or beyond. Hustle Paintball is that store! Hustle Paintball has your back, and that is what really counts. Our mission is to take care of you when something happens so that you do not need to worry when placing an order with us.
There is something to be said about having a staff that is 100% comprised of people who have an actual care about what is going on in the industry. You seem to get a level of care and respect that is nonexistent when you work with someone who just has no passion for it. We all have our own opinions on what we like and what we like to do, but not a single one of us is going to bash on you for your choices or try to make you feel less for any purchase you have made.
We are here to help; THAT is what we love to do. We are not here to sell you what will bring us the highest profit margin – when you want something, we will tell you what is our favorite. We will tell you which is our favorite in which price range as well. To me, the experience we bring is like when you walk into a decently run Cold Stone Creamery.
We are here to educate, explain and give our personal ideas and opinions. We are NOT here to TELL you what and how to buy. I am not writing this to toot our own horn, but as a business it is important to know what it is that you do that sets you apart. We are different from every single other online paintball retailer, and in a lot of cases, local shops as well because the level of care that we provide is 100%.
I kid you not. We recently had a customer call us and tell us that they did not get every item they ordered. Here is the thing, I pulled and packed the order, and it was double checked by both Ethan and Jeff. We take shipping out orders extremely seriously as we ourselves hate getting things incorrectly. We ordered these items specifically for the customer, and inventory was 100% spot on. The “missing” items most definitely were in the box when it left the warehouse. Not a single one of us was concerned on if this was an honest issue, or something a little more sinister. It doesn’t matter. Our job was to make sure the customer got his product, and so we have. We call this “investing in our future” – who in the heck cares if someone was telling the truth, or lost it themselves or what have you. Our #1 concern is YOU, the customer being satisfied with your order and with us. If we ensure that, you are much more likely to order with us in the future.
Start making a statement to the other companies (you know who they are) If you do not want to deal with stress, or have things blamed on you. You know where to shop.

I want to take the time to acknowledge how special the team we have here at Hustle Paintball is. Seriously, this is not your typical pyramid of power supported by the ever stalwart pull of the paycheck. Honestly guys, if it were about the money; I am not sure a single one of us would be answering phone calls, or responding to emails.
This article is titled “Family Dinner” because that is what we like to do. We do not literally sit down and have a scheduled family dinner, but we often sit down together and celebrate things like anniversaries, or team goals we have reached.

In fact recently on our day off we had our traditional “Chinese and Champagne” day to celebrate a milestone for two of our team members’ time here.
Jay, as of early August has officially been here a year. Trevor, as of early August has been with the company for three years. It has taken Ethan some time, but he really has put together a hell of a team to help push our expectations of this company even further. Seriously, have you seen our video channel lately? Things are improving around here, every little thing is being looked at and we are asking ourselves as a team on what we can do to improve and make things better.
Much of what our mentality is in the office; we try to spread everywhere through our different mediums of interacting with you all, our customers. I mean, really we do not just see you all in the same light as some other companies out there. You are not walking wallets to us that we just want to pillage and move on to the next.
He may be the boss, but he sets the pace and grinds out every single day with us.
Especially locally, but even over the phone: Josh, Eric, Travis, C.J. – The list goes on and you know who you are; you are our friends.
On the 20th, we are all going to see the Denver Roller Dolls steamroll some people and just go out and have a good time together. This is not a “Team-building” exercise, something that we are doing because we believe we should. We are all going together because we genuinely want to. Being a team, and teamwork itself are the foundation of this company. When big things happen around the office, it is because we all put our heads together and create something as a team. There is not a single one of us who believes they are better than the person to the left or right.
This brings me to our teamwork outside of the office as well. As you all know, 100% of Hustle Paintball Staff are active paintball players.
Friendship & respect is what drives a lot of what we do.
Ethan, Jay, and Russell are on Team Anomaly and practice almost every weekend of the year regardless of weather. Trevor plays a lot less now due to his knee issues, and Jeff has a big family to take care of.
Regardless of why or when we play, every single one of us has a passion for this sport that we bring into our teamwork in the office. When you see us push a product, or “advertise” it, it is because we in fact like the product personally, and want to see it do well. The nice thing about this team mentality is often we have differing opinions on things. If you ask Ethan his opinion on one thing, you may get a wildly different opinion from Russell. That’s the thing, both opinions are going to be grounded by an actual paintball player who has a legitimate reason for what they like and do not. It is up to you at that point to make a decision on how likely your opinion is to line up with the person you are speaking with.
It is time to shamelessly plug a cool product we like.
The Planet Eclipse EMC kit for the Etha is probably one of the coolest things to hit the market in quite some time. There are a quite a few reasons why this kit alone makes me want to buy an Etha, just to have one. For one, it is meant for the Etha which is a fantastic entry level marker that shoots nicely and just feels great in the hands, it’s just a bit of an air hog. The Etha is quite light (2.05 lbs – 1/10th of a lb. lighter than the Etek4 LT) which makes adding this .8 lb. kit on to the marker not that big of a deal. With everything installed the marker is still only going to be 2.85 lbs in weight (sans tank & hopper of course). That’s a lot of customizability added without any real loss of mobility to you!
Planet Eclipse managed to make this upgrade quite light by not making it out of aluminum. Now, before you start to hang your head in frustration about yet another “plastic upgrade” coming out for your aluminum marker, STOP RIGHT THERE.

The guys at Eclipse are no slouches – just like the Etek3 & 4 before it, these “plastic” parts are made of Glass Reinforced Nylon (GRN) which is not only stupidly strong, but is the exact reason why Planet was able to keep the weight down to a minimum. Honestly, I am quite impressed with the construction of the product, as well as the look. The GRN gives a fantastic matte finish that looks spectacular in either color of the EMC Kit, dark earth or black.
Now, let’s get down to the real reasons I like this upgrade. First and foremost for the typical trashy paintballer like myself comes the look. I am not so sure about you but I have seen a lot of decked out tactical markers in my time in the industry. I have a bit of a taste for them, even though I do not like them for my personal use – I think a decked out tactical marker is so much more menacing and cool looking than my shiny laser beam machine. With that said, I think an Etha with the Dark Earth EMC kit is just plain fantastic looking.
If this doesn’t make your pants tighter, you have issues.
By itself, with no attachments just looking at it I want to play with it. If I put a stock and an AFG on the marker it has probably the most comfortable stance out of any paintball marker I have ever held. It just seems so natural and brings paintball to the full circle I feel it has needed to get to for some time.
This brings me to my second reason why I believe this to be a revolutionary product. If you have been reading my blogs lately, I am not a speedballer, or a scenario/woods baller. I am a paintballer, as we should all be. The EMC kit now turns the Etha into a paintball marker. Not a speedball marker. While we all know that space guns can go into the woods and into scenarios with no problems – it does kind of hurt the immersion and suspension of reality for the magic of a scenario. Me, being the type of paintball player I am, would actually go out with a tactical marker such as this one. The marker is still maneuverable and light, while also having the added benefit of tactical rails for me to customize the marker to be bespoke for me personally.
I love the fact that Planet Eclipse is really starting to take risks and is getting into the scenario game with their products, no, moreso they are blurring the lines between the two styles of paintball play.
Feel insecure about your current gat yet? I do.
Seriously, how awesome would it be to just slap an AFG on the thing, no other tactical accessories to weigh you down. Then go out to the NPPL or PSP field and merc some fools. I know that is all I can think of, it just feels so darn comfortable!
It is time to bring this all back to the real point of this post. What do I think about Planet Eclipse’s new EMC kit? Well, let’s just break it down into simple numbers & facts.
Price: $79.99 – I think this might be slightly overkill, I would have preferred a $69.99 price tag, but the fact that this is supremely well made AND backed by Planet? Totally worth the asking price.
Utility/Installation: 10 – Hey, if you don’t want it, don’t buy it. But it is super easy to install, looks great, and adds the ability to configure your marker personally in millions of ways. This is a must buy for anyone who likes the tactical side of paintball, but prefers a marker that isn’t 12 lbs, or $1,000.00 with “quirks”.
Lasting Appeal: 8 – I already handed out a 10 and just do not want to be too generous, this kit is great all around. I would just like one for more markers than just the Etha :).

Yes, it has been some time since we have written a blog. Turns out we’re not as good at it as some people out there. Hopefully we can pick up a notch or two in the coming months, however until then we would like to introduce you to a new series of blogs that we will be adding to slowly over time. Guest blogging! Our first in this series has been written by Jason who was a customer first, and has since become a friend and volunteer at the shop. So, without any further ado, take it away Jason!
I’ve had some pretty terrible experiences attempting to buy paintball equipment in my local area. After going to some paintball shop in Denver and feeling like I did not get the best deal possible; I started looking for another place to buy my paintball gear. Hours of searching was done on the Internet looking up other paintball shops in the Denver area. I then found a place called Hustle Paintball. They are in an odd and difficult location it seemed at first, but being right by the Flatirons crossing mall is just the icing on top of the cake. Above all else is the customer service I received on MY VERY FIRST VIST. I must have spent well over an hour with Jay talking about all the options for paintball markers, gear, and what would work best for my family’s needs; I immediately decided that Hustle Paintball was our best bet. A week later I took my wife, our three kids, and a friend into Hustle and we walked out with four markers, four masks, and four air tanks.
Working hard or hardly working?
I was so impressed with the level of customer service we received that I knew I had to be a part of this great Colorado company in some way. I asked Ethan if I could come in and volunteer my time to help with the day to day operations at Hustle Paintball, and Ethan agreed. For the past month I have done everything from the tedious job of putting together O Ring packs, helping with shipping & receiving orders, to plumbing a refrigerator. I was also used as Russell’s “third hand” in the TPX First Strike round mod video.
I’m constantly learning new things about the game of paintball, paintball products, and how to tech my own markers. I think above all else what I have learned is that Hustle isn’t like most other companies in our area, or even the U.S. – They are taking that extra mile to make all of their customers feel as important as they truly are to them. They are transparent, friendly, helpful people that are just looking to support their community and their families. I can say without a doubt that it has been one of the greatest all around experiences I have ever had with any company.
